It’s a struggle Maryland commuters know well – staring at brake lights on the highway.

A new study says Maryland’s congested roads cost drivers $5.8 billion dollars in 2022.

The report shared Tuesday by TRIP, a National Transportation Research Nonprofit, analyzed the cost of traffic delays, wasted fuel, and emissions.

The headache of congestion came at a cost of up to $2,465 per driver statewide.

In the Baltimore region each year, the report said traffic congestion costs the average driver to spend an extra 59 hours in traffic, burning 22 more gallons of fuel.

The total dollar amount of the Baltimore-area congestion impact is $1,371 per driver, the report said.

The report also analyzed Maryland's most congested highways and arterial roads during the morning and evening commutes.
