Baltimore County, MD – Dec. 20, 2022 – Personal safety is paramount when it comes to online purchases, especially when it comes to a transaction that involves meeting a stranger. In an effort to keep Baltimore County residents safe and deter crimes such as theft, robbery and fraud, the Baltimore County Police Department has established Transaction Safe Zones at each of its precincts.

BUYING OR SELLING ITEMS

When selling or purchasing items from an unknown person, the Baltimore County Police Department offers the following safety tips:

1. Always meet the buyer or seller at a location that is well populated, well lit, and preferably at a designated police transaction safe zone.
2. Tell a friend or family member where you’re going to meet someone and when possible, take a friend with you.
3. Inform the buyer/seller that you will not be alone.
4. Trust your instincts – if it sounds like a scam or too good to be true, it probably is.
5. Do not invite strangers into your home.
6. Never give out any personal or financial information.
