Baltimore, MD – Dec. 20, 2022 – Whether your holiday plans include driving in the mid-Atlantic region or flying, in the coming days ahead of the weekend we could see some troublesome winter weather. Forecasters expect a combination of rain, a flash freeze and powerful winds on Thursday and Friday, leading into what could be a bitterly cold weekend.

The forecast currently calls for mostly rain. There's a chance, however, that a band of cold Arctic air could push down toward Maryland and change that to a wintry mix or snow on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for the region due to winds and a rapid freeze starting Friday. The message includes the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, tidal Potomac River, and I-95 corridor through central Maryland, northern Virginia, and District of Columbia.

Maryland counties specifically under the hazard outlook are: Cecil, Baltimore, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Marys, Calvert, Montgomery, Howard and Harford.

Forecasters say high winds Friday morning through the evening could cause tree damage and isolated power outages. Then, plummeting temperatures Friday may cause icy travel conditions.
On Friday and Saturday nights, “dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills” are anticipated, according to the National Weather Service.
