US community pharmacies are facing shortages in antibiotics, over-the-counter therapies for children, and a widely used ADHD drug, reported Bloomberg News. In a recent survey, 80% of pharmacies reported difficulty filling prescriptions for amoxicillin and 93% reported shortages of children’s pain and fever medicines. 97% reported a lack of access to Adderall. These shortages are due to various reasons including increased demand and supply chain disruptions. The Food and Drug Administration and European Union states have reported these shortages, with two major manufacturers predicting the shortages to persist for several more months. Although stocks of over-the-counter children’s medicines are increasing, there may still be intermittent shortages in some areas. The US is currently facing a particularly severe time for drug shortages, with 295 medicines in shortage in the last quarter of 2022, the most since 2018.
