Baltimore, MD – Feb. 12, 2023 – Maryland officials and advocates are promoting a tax-based easy enrollment program for health insurance in which state residents can check a box on their tax return to receive information about their eligibility for low-cost or free health insurance, says the AP. The program, established in 2019, is the first of its kind in the US and has been adopted by nine other states. The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange, which manages the state’s online health insurance marketplace, provides follow-up information on how to enroll. Over 100,000 Maryland residents have expressed interest, and more than 10,000 have enrolled in health insurance. Senator Chris Van Hollen is introducing legislation to allow for health insurance enrollment during the federal tax return process.
