ABC27 reports that the US Postal Service is filing a notice about changes to the Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM®), to tackle the issue of counterfeit postage. The revised changes to DMM 604.8.4 mean that items found with counterfeit postage in the mail stream will be treated as abandoned and disposed of at the Postal Service’s discretion. Under the new regulations, consumers will have to seek recourse from the vendor, and the Postal Service will provide the public with notice of the handling of items bearing counterfeit postage. The Postal Service urges consumers to be mindful when purchasing online items as vendors might mail goods using counterfeit postage. Public comments can be submitted until March 15, 2023, and are part of the public record subject to disclosure.
