Maryland leaders made their case to the FBI and General Services Administration Wednesday to move the FBI’s headquarters to the state.

Leaders present included Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Sen. Ben Cardin, among others.

Landover, Greenbelt, and Springfield, Virginia are the three sites in contention for the new FBI headquarters. Van Hollen said, unlike Springfield, Maryland’s proposed locations are more in line with President Joe Biden’s ideology.

“President Biden has been clear in the executive order, that providing equity in federal investments is whole of government effort. The whole of government includes the GSA. The whole of government includes the FBI,” Van Hollen said.

Lawmakers argued that Landover and Greenbelt both provide the correct choice in terms of timeline, costs and access to public transportation. Those are all criteria the GSA will consider in its final decision.

The Landover site would be located near the old Landover Mall, near FedEx Field. The Greenbelt site is near the Beltway Plaza Mall.

According to the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, the two proposed Maryland sites are build-ready, and can finish the new FBI headquarters two to four years earlier than the competing site in Virginia, saving taxpayers between $250 and $500 million.

“Where the Biden administration decides to put the new FBI headquarters will inform the mission, the growth, and also the efficacy of the bureau, not just for this year, but for years to come,” said Moore.

Maryland Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Mary Kane said the state is a perfect fit for the FBI.

“Maryland is a hub for cybersecurity, serving as the home of the National Security Agency and Cyber Command at Fort George G. Meade, and as a perfect location for the FBI’s Cybersecurity Center,” Kane said.

Virginia leaders pitched their case to the GSA last month. There is no timetable for when a final decision will be made.
