The stoves emit nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, linked to respiratory illness, cardiovascular problems, and cancer. The commission plans to take action. However, a ban is unlikely and homeowners won’t have to replace their gas stoves. The White House opposes a ban and it’s “extraordinarily unlikely” that any future ban would require appliance replacement, according to Consumer Reports Appliance Editor Paul Hope. Some Republican leaders have expressed outrage, but the low adoption rate of gas cooking appliances in states such as Florida has led to criticism of the backlash. Montgomery County in Maryland has approved legislation to phase out gas appliance usage in most new construction starting in 2027.
