A new study ranked Maryland the state with the longest emergency room waiting times.

The study, conducted by  Med.ro, looked at the average waiting time between when patients arrived at the emergency room to when they were called for treatment.

The study found Maryland patients have to wait an average of 239 minutes, the equivalent of four hours, before being called to get treated.

Maryland’s elevated score occurs despite the presence of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Johns Hopkins has been named the largest medical center in the state with 1,162 beds, ranking No. 1 in Maryland and No. 5 in the nation on U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2022–23 Honor Roll.

A possible reason for Maryland’s extended wait time is the renovation of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The emergency room is currently undergoing renovations to improve service, update waiting rooms and add patient care spaces.

The state with the second highest average waiting time is Delaware, sitting at 215 minutes.
