Maryland’s senior senator has been recommended to temporarily replace California’s senator on the Judiciary Committee, but Republicans aren’t having it.

U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Maryland, has been recommended to temporarily replace U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Cardin tweeted that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, recommended the Maryland senator as a temporary replacement on the committee.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Schumer was asked whether he has selected a senator who he would like to temporarily replace Feinstein, and the majority leader answered: “Ben Cardin.”

“I served on the Judiciary Committee when I first came to the Senate, and I am prepared to rejoin the committee in a temporary capacity for Sen. Feinstein,” Cardin tweeted. “Sen. Feinstein’s work on the Judiciary Committee and her legacy in the Senate are legendary. I look forward to her full recovery and return.”
