Baltimore, MD – Oct. 16, 2023  – Baltimore City Councilman Zeke Cohen plans to propose a resolution inviting various city and state agencies to engage in discussions regarding the matter. The invitees include the Baltimore Police Department, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE), Baltimore City’s State’s Attorney’s Office, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, and the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services.

The Baltimore Police Department has reported over 7,700 car thefts and 380 carjackings this year, which have raised concerns about the potential for these thefts to lead to more violent crimes.

Cohen expressed his worries about the situation, stating, “It can quickly escalate, it can quickly turn violent. The sheer numbers are just staggering. We’re seeing so many of these car thefts in all neighborhoods in Baltimore.

He emphasized the impact of these constant car thefts on the residents, saying, “I hear a lot from my constituents. Baltimore is an incredible city and to me, it is right on the verge of a renaissance. But, dealing with constant car thefts, dealing with daily quality of life issues—it wears people down.”
