<p>Amazon is expected to begin layoffs this week, according to a report by the&nbsp;<em>New York Times</em>. People who have knowledge of the plans said that roughly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/14/technology/amazon-layoffs.html" _mce_href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/14/technology/amazon-layoffs.html" target="_blank">10,000 people will be fired</a>&nbsp;as part of a plan by CEO&nbsp;<strong>Andy Jassy</strong>&nbsp;to cut costs.</p> <p>The cuts will mainly include people working in corporate or technology jobs.</p> <p>The layoffs will trim Amazon's corporate staff by about 3%, though they represent just 1% of Amazon's global workforce.</p> <p>The staff reductions come amid other cost-cutting measures since Jassy took over in 2021. Over the past year,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/14/amazon-reportedly-plans-to-lay-off-about-10000-employees-starting-this-week.html" _mce_href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/14/amazon-reportedly-plans-to-lay-off-about-10000-employees-starting-this-week.html" target="_blank">Amazon has shut down all but one of its U.S. call centers</a>&nbsp;and closed down a number of brick-and-mortar chains.</p> <p>Amazon joins Meta and Twitter, which have both announced significant layoffs. Last week Meta CEO&nbsp;<strong>Mark Zuckerberg</strong>&nbsp;announced that around&nbsp;<a href="https://www.iheart.com/content/2022-11-09-mark-zuckerberg-announces-meta-is-laying-off-11000-employees/" _mce_href="https://www.iheart.com/content/2022-11-09-mark-zuckerberg-announces-meta-is-laying-off-11000-employees/" target="_blank">11,000 employees were being terminated</a>. Meanwhile, Twitter's new CEO,&nbsp;<strong>Elon Musk</strong>, has begun reducing the social media company's workforce by about 50%.</p> <p>The process has not been smooth. He&nbsp;<a href="https://www.iheart.com/content/2022-11-04-twitter-sued-over-mass-layoffs-following-elon-musks-takeover/" _mce_href="https://www.iheart.com/content/2022-11-04-twitter-sued-over-mass-layoffs-following-elon-musks-takeover/" target="_blank">faced a lawsuit over the mass layoffs</a>&nbsp;and was forced to rehire some employees after they were let go.</p>
