Family members and fire safety leaders are calling for compliance with a state law requiring sprinklers in all apartments and condominiums after a fire in a Silver Spring high rise apartment killed one woman and sent 20 victims, including three firefighters, to the hospital, reports FOX45. State law requires all new high-rise residential buildings to have sprinklers in each unit, but buildings built before this code was in place have until January 1, 2033, to retrofit their buildings with sprinklers. The Arrive apartments where the fire occurred lacked sprinklers in each unit. Montgomery County Fire Marshal Rick Merck said 76 high-rise residential buildings in the county also lack sprinklers in every unit. Montgomery County leaders are working to create an online database that allows residents to check which apartments and condominiums do not have sprinklers in each unit, and buildings without sprinklers will be required to post signage indicating they do not have them.
