In a City dominated by concerns about crime, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has become the first incumbent in four decades to lose re-election.

“When you have an incumbent lose it should be a wake-up call, and it should be a wake-up call to Mayor Scott because she lost for many of the reasons people are frustrated in Baltimore,” said John Dedie, a local political analyst.

Those reasons, Dedie says, crime and education.

Two issues the people of Baltimore have pleaded leaders to improve month after month, year after year.

“People have to see the light at the end of the tunnel is the sun and not a train,” said Dedie.

This fear and frustration already reflected in the polls in Baltimore.

This past election, more than 70% of voters in Baltimore voted to remove former City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, known for her progressive policies.

“Voters want to see that you’re resolving and solving,” said Dedie.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has made it clear he will seek re-election in 2024.

The latest statistics from the Baltimore Police Department show homicides are down 22% in the City compared to this time last year, and non-fatal shootings are down more than 28% compared to this time in 2022.

Dedie believes a good move for Scott would be to stay close with newly elected City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates, who took office at the beginning of this year and has vowed to be tough on guns, repeat offenders and enforce all laws in the books.
