Marylanders shared their opinions in the latest Gonzales Poll about a ban on the sale on gas-powered cars in the state, a push that Governor Wes Moore said he supported initiating by 2035.
The most recent poll was conducted from May 30 through June 6, with a margin of error of 3.5%.
Of 841 voters polled statewide, 60.8% oppose banning the sale of gas-powered vehicles; 37.2% agree; 2.0% were undecided, according to the poll.
When asked further of their position on a potential ban:
- 14.3% strongly support the ban of gas-powered cars
- 22.9% somewhat support the ban of gas-powered cars
- 11.2% somewhat oppose the ban of gas-powered cars
- 49.6% strongly oppose the ban of gas-powered cars
Much of the support for the ban within the polled group consisted of 55.1% registered democrats, with 43.3% of the same group opposed to it, and a remaining 1.6% undecided.
Much of the opposition for the ban within the polled group consisted of 92.3% registered republicans, with 5.9% of the same group in support of it, and a remaining 1.8% undecided.
Participants living on the Eastern Shore hold the most opposition by region of the state, with 79.2% not in favor of banning gas-powered vehicles.
The largest group of supporters for the ban live within the D.C. suburbs, with 45.7% polling in favor of a ban.
When asked about a ban of gas-powered cars relating to a proportional reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide emissions released, voters still held an overall majority opposition to a potential ban:
- 44.2% of voters supported the ban of gas-powered cars
- 53.6% of voters opposed the ban of gas-powered cars
- 2.1% of voters were undecided on the ban of gas-powered cars
