The company has yet to indicate why it’s closing the store, however, insiders said the level of theft is a major factor.

Last month, a spokeswoman for Giant Foods admitted that theft and violence has the longtime supermarket chain to weigh whether to close of it’s stores.

Eddie’s of Mt. Vernon closed for pretty much the same reasons.

“It’s to the point that some of the crime and aggression going on, they can’t get employees to come in because they don’t feel safe,” said Cailey Locklair, President of the Maryland Retailer’ Association.

Locklair said Maryland is now one of the top five states in the country with the highest retail theft rates.

“We really are at a breaking point where we need all of our partners to address it,” said Locklair.
