Vilnius, Lithuania – Sept. 15, 2026 – NATO fighter jets shot down an unidentified drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace overnight, marking the first time an unmanned aircraft has been intercepted over the NATO member country, according to Lithuanian officials.
The drone was brought down near Pratkūnai, approximately 60 miles west of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius and close to the Kaunas Reservoir. Lithuanian soldiers secured the area after the wreckage was located.
Officials have not yet determined where the drone originated or what its intended target may have been. Antanas Matutis, commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, said preliminary evidence indicated that the aircraft was likely carrying explosives. A full investigation is underway.
Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center, told the country’s public broadcaster that the drone most likely entered Lithuanian territory from neighboring Belarus. It reportedly remained in Lithuanian airspace for approximately 30 minutes and traveled near the outskirts of populated areas before being intercepted.
The incident comes amid growing concern over unauthorized drone activity and other security threats along NATO’s eastern border. Lithuania shares borders with Belarus, a close Russian ally, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Several NATO countries, including Poland, Germany, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, have recently raised concerns about suspected acts of sabotage, surveillance of military facilities, arson, and drone incursions. Officials have accused Russia of involvement in some of those incidents, although the origin of the drone downed over Lithuania has not yet been officially confirmed.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Monday that strikes taking place close to alliance territory demonstrate Russia’s increasing recklessness as its war against Ukraine continues. He pledged that NATO would strengthen its defenses along the alliance’s eastern border and continue supporting Ukraine.
In a separate confrontation Tuesday, Denmark accused a Russian warship of firing flares toward a Danish Air Force helicopter conducting what Danish authorities described as routine surveillance over international waters in the Baltic Sea. Denmark summoned Russia’s ambassador following the incident. Russian officials, however, accused the Danish helicopter of carrying out provocative maneuvers near the vessel.
The heightened tensions unfolded as drone attacks continued in both Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes killed several people and damaged energy and civilian infrastructure. Russia’s Defense Ministry, meanwhile, claimed that its forces intercepted more than 200 Ukrainian drones overnight.
The Lithuanian government said further analysis of the recovered wreckage would be needed before officials could identify the drone’s origin and determine whether its entry into NATO airspace was intentional.
